where it came from
i saw my kuda wrapped and thought: why can't every bank do this?
kuda has their annual recap, spotify has wrapped, even some credit cards do it now. but the vast majority of nigerian bank users never get to see their year in numbers laid out in a way that's actually interesting to look at. your uba statement is a pdf. your gtb statement is a pdf. there's nothing visual, nothing that makes you go "wait, i spent that much on food?"
i didn't overthink it. i just built it.
what it does
you upload your bank statement, any bank, and unwrapped parses it and turns it into a slide-styled visual recap. your total spend, your biggest categories, your most active months, the transactions that hit different. all presented in a clean, shareable format that feels less like a spreadsheet and more like a story.
built with next.js and tailwind css. the design was intentionally fun, the kind of thing you'd want to screenshot and post. which, as it turned out, people did.
what happened next
i posted it on twitter with no real expectations. it was a side project, something i built because the idea was interesting and i wanted to see if i could pull it off. then 480 people went and generated their own recaps.
that's the thing about building in public. sometimes you ship something just for the fun of it and it turns out a lot of other people were thinking the same thing. unwrapped wasn't trying to be a product. it just ended up being one anyway.
let's build something worth talking about
